Returning to his role as Robert McCall, a retired DIA officer and former U.S. Marine who has been leading a quiet life in Boston, Denzel Washington is now serving on a mission in Southern Italy. The film opens with McCall being held at gunpoint by a gang of mafia goons in a remote Sicilian winery. He sets off his stopwatch, as he always does before venturing his fury, to give his opponent some time to change their ways, but naturally, they never did. I had to look away for the majority of this graphic sequence because it features a nasty shot through someone’s eye socket. The powerful sound design of breaking bones and tearing flesh makes sure that viewers feel McCall’s.
